Ok... So, the blog has been a little weird lately, and has been litered with entirely too many YOUTUBE clips and half crazed rants from yours truly. For these, that is if you bothered to read those awful paragraphs of whiny nonsense, I apologize profusely. I have redesigned the blog in my mind, and am working on translating that into reality. I announced like a half million years ago that I was going to take the blog off of blogger and take it to its new home hosted off my domain, this should be taking place soon. I don't want to set a date in stone, because that shit always bites me in the ass, but it will be soonish, I swear yo!

My most recent project has been MANCAT ATTACKS!, a comic strip that I've been workin' on with my good buddy James. It is being published in REAX MAGAZINE, a really fresh new magazine about the local music scene in Tampa, FL. Yeah, obviously I have no connection to Tampa or Florida, but James is my homey from way way back so its all good like THIS. Also, working on gettin' the website for mancat goin' so that y'all can have the pleasure of reading the comic. It started out as a joke, but we kinda cornered ourselves into doing a serious strip, wait for it... wait for it... oh yes. Peep the current progress

#500 - HALF'A'THOUSAND REFLECTIONS DON'T MEAN A THING

Monday, July 18th, 2005, I embarked on a blogging journey with a really boring post and a picture I took with someone else's digital camera. On that post i said, "this is the beginning of something boring. i guarantee it.", and boy did I deliver!

So here it is, my 500th post in just a little over a year of blogging. Although, now that i'm writing about it, it actually doesn't seem all that impressive (ha ha ha). Anyway, i guess i never thought i'd get this addicted to "blogging"! I think i always made fun of having a blog, and hipster/net-heads, but hey... looks like i am one :)! Hehe, well i guess the age-old sayin, "it takes one to know one," really holds true here. Ah well, c'est la vie...

It's been one year since i started, and in as many ways as i feel like i've made progress, i can't help but feel like i'm exactly back where i began all those months ago. However, it wasn't all for naught I have gone through tons of shit in the last 365 days, cried, been happy, pissed and moaned, took on new challenges (succeeding at some & failing some others), started new habits, travelled, worked, feigned working, studied, sighed an awful lot, had a SERIOUS and quite jarring awakening as to who are my real friends in this world, started my own war on drugs, wrote (a lot actually), reflected, actually made plans for the future, scraped those plans, & then made more plans, quit bad habits, fucked, fought, walked, ran, learned new skills, jumped, kicked, punched, jump-kicked & jump-punched, opened my eyes, and ultimately just grew up a hell of a lot. In the end, after all the belly aching, and pain, and joy that i've endured ... i have no regrets.

People been asking me what i'm gonna do next year, if i'm going to stay in NYC or not, etc. To be completely honest I really have no comment on that at this time. I don't know yet, I don't know where this twisted road of thorns is leading me... but i promise, mes amis, when i know... you will know, and if I don't tell you anything at all... well there's a very good reason for that, mes ennemis.

So onward forthward and beyond, mes amis. I will continue to bore you with my dreary thought-speak until i reach some sort of self-made-techno-nirvana... or whatever.

I finally got to see 'Wassup Rockers' this weekend... and I really really really dug it. I wasn't exactly the biggest fan of 'Kids' or of Larry Clark's in general, but 'Wassup Rockers' has a much more genuine feel.

The story is about a bunch of bad ass punk rock skateboarding Guatemalan and Salvadorian kids from South Central L.A. who get stuck in Beverly Hills and have to find their way out. You really have to just see it, because the kids he got to play the roles are so real it doesn't do anything to talk about them. Just go watch it. Best part by far is the kick ass latino punk rock... punk is really not dead.

I always find it dificult to try to find a balance between, being selfish and caring about my own needs, and comparing my problems to the larger problems of the world. Like, sure I've got some shit I'm currently going through, and yeah it's taxing on my soul and my brain is overclockin', but I don't have Israeli missles falling from the sky on to my house. I don't look around and see devastation, and all my friends, family and loved ones are still alive.

In comparison, my shit is heaven. The worst thing that's happened to me today, is that it's hot out. That, in the great grand scheme of things, is a blessing like no other. I try my best not to complain about the little things, and I try my best to be a good person on a daily basis. Sometimes my own bullshit clouds my judgement, and I try to see past it, but other times I can't forget that I am in fact dealing with stuff in my own life as well.

Like I was saying... I've been trying to find a balance in between, being selfish, and being selfless & it's fairly tricky... but, being able to sit around and think about it, is a priviledge that I will not squander.

all in all. i have no regrets.

In 1912, during the Balkan War, Bulgarian Air Force pilot Christo Toprakchiev suggested the use of airplanes to drop "bombs" (as grenades were called in the Bulgarian army at this time) on Turkish positions. Captain Simeon Petrov developed the idea and created several prototypes by adapting different types of grenades and increasing their payload. On 16 October 1912, observer Prodan Toprakchiev dropped two of those bombs on the Turkish railway station of Karaagac (near the besieged Edirne) from an Albatros F.II airplane piloted by Radul Milkov. This was the first use of an airplane as a bomber.

After a number of tests Petrov created the final design, with improved aerodynamics, an X shaped tail and impact detonator. This version was widely used by the Bulgarian Air Force during the siege of Edrine. Later a copy of the plans was sold to Germany and the bomb, codenamed "Chathaldza" ("Чаталджа") remained in mass production until the end of World War I.

The weight of the bomb was 6 kilograms. On impact it created a crater 4-5 meters wide and about 1 meter deep.

"Coup de Boule", the French translation for head-butt, was written after France's defeat by the three associates of Plage Records, www.laplagerecords.com, a small label specialising in advertising music.

Zidane, widely regarded as one of the finest footballers of his generation, was sent off for head-butting Materazzi after exchanging comments with the Italian defender. Italy won the final after a penalty shoot-out.

Scenarios like this that make me stop & think about what I'm doing. Japan was up 1-0 for the whole game, until the final 8 minutes... and they got fucking rocked because they slept on their duties. Not only that, but they also let their emotions get the better of them and they gave up 3 goals in the last few minutes.

Morals of this Story (that i learned...):
Keep your emotions in check, and don't let them get the better of you.

Don't become relaxed with the pace of things and expect shit to just fall into place.

You must follow through to the end if you expect to succeed, and you must be prepared for any deviation of the original plan.

A World Cup Debate

My friends are die hard futbol/soccer fans. They want more than anything for American Soccer to be treated the same way it is everywhere else in the world. They want Team USA to succeed and not be the laughing stock of the World Cup every 4 years.

During a friendly trash talking session via email, in which i was rooting for Ghana in the faces of multiple Team USA supporters, this question was addressed to me by my good friend:

"I honestly do not understand if you live in this country why you would root against the US, especially against some obscure Afrcian Nation. It really confuses me that someone would want to be so flamboyantly oppositional solely for the sake of being oppositional. That shit is weak sauce. SERIOUSLY. where is our pride?"

*Sidenote - I am half American, half Japanese, and I am indeed an American citizen.

To be clear, I was not being "oppositional" solely for the sake of being "oppositional" and was in fact rooting for the underdogs of the game. Being the final representative from Africa in the World Cup, it was quite an exciting match for Ghana and I really wanted to see them push through to the second round, regardless that they were playing the US. Now you may argue here that the US is in fact one of the underdogs of the World Cup, but I look at this in an entirely different light.

I feel that Ghana, as a country, will benefit so much more from a victory than the US would. The United States of America, more so than any other country, reminds the rest of world at large that we are the best. "We are the best country", "we have the best military", "we have the best religion", "we have the best economy", "we have the best government", "we have the best ideals", "we have the best industry". Our teams that only play sports domestically, are considered "World Champions" after their respective league finals. We force our policies on the rest of the world, we make and break our own rules with no reprisal, and as far as international relations go America pretty much shits on anyone who doesn't share our same views. Think about the war that we started this year effectively driving rifts through alliances that we've had for close to 100 years.

So, every 4 years comes along this wonderful tournament where the number 1 assholes in the world have to feel like they make the rest of the world feel for the other 1,460ish days in between World Cups. These countries that the US refers to as, "developing nations" get to shine and receive the reverence and respect that they should be receiving always. Williamsburg, "Brooklyn" is such a place that I have to make a face when I tell people that I indeed reside there. A sort of wounded face that tries to say, "Yeah that's where I'm living but, no I'm not really proud of living there, and please don't associate me with the rest of the residents in Childrentown, USA". Which is followed by a lengthy explanation about how, yes I am a young twenty-something who is intersted in the arts & culture, but no ,I am not a 'hipster'(frankly I'd rather be incorrectly called an Asian American, because at least that group has offered some benefits to society!). This grotesque horde of hipsters and "artists", which borders on being called an infestation, has consumed this corner of north western Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and frankly I'm tired of all the guilt by association.

This past weekend there was a "block party" on the street in front of my building. They started setting up tents at around 9 in the morning, I saw this on my way in to the city, and it actually looked like it might be a legitimate street event. However, upon my return home I noticed that the three tents that were setting up when i left, were in fact the only tents; 2 tents about awareness of violence against gays or women or both, and 1 fresh juice smoothie tent. There were about 25 - 30 people in attendance, and they featured about 8 bands. Needless to say the music was horrible, and the crowd was mostly sitting on the side walk in a single file line.

This pathetic excuse for a block party, that actually seemed to have a good cause at its core, made me think about the lack of community in this area. If this truly was a prolific area ripe with a youthful sense of forward thinking, people would have come out of the woodwork and participated in a movement in the true sense of the phrase. However, this is not the case and it is in fact an area of many small niches each thinking that they are "cooler" than the other, or dirtier I haven't been able to discern the difference yet. GreenPeace representatives on the streets would have more luck stabbing themselves in the face to get attention than actually expecting any of these so-called aware children to stop and give a shit. Williamsburg kids care about parties, moustaches, small tshirts, fixed gear bikes, being dirty, and imported pints of beer. They don't vote, they listen to Michael Moore, and their idea of active public particiaption is listening to Air America.

An interesting thing that i've noticed lately is that the Moustached Masses have begun to procreate and spawn hipster babies. There are a couple hipster baby stores in the area, and they seem to be trying to nest in this area. Now, as everyone knows, all of the real estate in this area is being feasted upon by developer and owners alike, effectively trumping the ability to set down roots in this area (unless you want to drop a few million on a new condo). It seems very obvious to me that the Williamsburg of RIGHT NOW, has come as far as the children can take it and the adults will be moving in to replace all this hype with condos and IKEAs (you can just look at the rampant development that is taking place on Kent Ave right now). There were a lot of cute little attempts at organizing and going up against the developers to "preserve Williamsburg". The irony of this was that, i'm sure the original long term Polish residents of the area felt the exact same way about all these children moving in a destroying the peace and sanctity of THEIR neighborhood, and now the original invaders are staking claim to something that they have defiled themselves (...classic americanism).

*Oh, and on a side note when the hell did trying to look like a cheesy parody of a 70s porn star become a coveted look?!?

Oh and by the way... the corner of N7th and Bedford smells like the combination of a thousand dead fish + urine + vomit. It's REALLY gross, so stay away.
